The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared that a deadly pathogen that reached the U.S. Gulf Coast is now endemic there, which means it is now a constant presence in the area although not spreading out of control.
The public health agency said the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei has a fatality rate of around 50 percent worldwide. Infections caused by the pathogen can cause the potentially fatal disease called melioidosis, also called Whitmore’s disease, if left untreated.

Marburg is a hemorrhagic fever that kills the majority of the people it infects. According to a recent study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly everyone in the United States has some form of protection against COVID-19.
The new CDC study analyzed blood donations from 142,748 individuals aged 16 and older between July and September 2022. The researchers found that 96.4 percent of the donors had evidence of antibodies against COVID-19, indicating prior infection, vaccination, or both.
