Regional Bank Stocks Plunge on Friday; More Pain Ahead as 10-Year Treasury Note Trades at a 5 Percent Yield This Morning

As the chart above indicates, Friday was not a good day to own regional bank stocks. The percentage declines are just for the one day of trading on Friday — not the year-to-date percentage losses. After the bank runs this past spring at regional banks brought on the second, third and fourth largest bank failures in U.S. history, things had quieted down in recent months. Then, along came earnings announcements last week, showing renewed struggles among the regional banks.
One of the big losers for the week was Zions Bancorp. Its shares plunged 9.7 percent on Thursday and another 7.07 percent on Friday. The bank posted poor year-over-year comparisons on net interest income as it experienced rising expenses to compete for deposits.

Titanium Dioxide, Banned in Europe, Is One of the Most Common Food Additives in the U.S.

Titanium dioxide is the most widely used whitening pigment in the world and has been linked to adverse health effects, particularly genotoxicity and intestinal inflammation. It is applied as food coloring and a whitening agent to a wide variety of foods, including chewing gum, cakes, candies, breads and ice cream.
Because of health risks, France banned titanium dioxide as a food additive in 2020. Two years later the European Union also banned titanium dioxide as a food additive.

Israel to Consider Civilians ‘Terrorist Accomplices’ If They Stay in North Gaza

The Israeli military has told Palestinian civilians living in north Gaza that if they don’t evacuate to the south, they will be considered “an accomplice in a terrorist organization,”
The warning was made in threatening leaflets dropped by Israeli drones on Saturday. “Urgent warning, to residents of Gaza. Your presence north of Wadi Gaza puts your life in danger. Whoever chooses not to leave north Gaza to the south of Wadi Gaza might be identified as an accomplice in a terrorist organization,” the leaflets said, according to Reuters.

Alleged “companies” are starting to fail that really are nothing more than cash furnaces existing on the back of “free” money poured in through various “venture” and “investment” funds — all with a singular focus: I gotta make something somewhere, and if I can’t come up with a clean way to sell a product or service I’ll try to flip the table over and monopolize by grabbing a book of business and arbitrage it.
This is, when you get down to it, pretty much what the entire “Short Term Rental” game is about; the arbitrage is in evading commercial building codes, commercial taxes (which are almost always assessed much higher than residential property) and other sorts of fees and expenses that should fall on the operator of said properties (e.g. commercial customers nearly-always pay demand charges for power and often also pay for “apparent power”, otherwise known as “power factor” — while residential customers pay for neither.)
