Record Silver Demand in 2022 and Other Silver News

This is one of several silver-related stories in the latest edition of Silver News published by the Silver Institute.
Industrial demand was up 5% last year to 556.5 million ounces, driven by rapidly increasing use in the green technology sector. Industrial offtake makes up nearly half of all silver demand.

China: Kremlin Drone Attack Crossed a ‘Red Line’ in Ukraine War

The Chinese Global Times government newspaper described the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin early Wednesday morning as the crossing of a “red line” in the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine: the targeting of heads of state.
Videos surfaced on Wednesday of unidentified objects in the airspace above the Kremlin in Moscow on Wednesday, apparently attempting to target the Russian capital. Russian officials announced shortly thereafter that the skyward objects civilians observed were armed drones deployed in an attempt, they claimed, to assassinate Vladimir Putin. The Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry vowed “imminent and inevitable punishment” for the culprits once an investigation identifies them and, without directly blaming Ukraine, claimed the drone incident was proof of the necessity of Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country.

The banking and financial crisis is far from over. Yesterday, the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates yet again to “fight” inflation, however, this could create a “domino effect” of regional bank failures. PacWest Bancorp is now considering a sale or “other moves” to keep it “solvent” for the time being.
The Fed raised the benchmark federal funds rate to a range between 5% and 5.25%, which is the highest level since 2007, at a time when bank customers are already feeling anxious after a string of recent bank failures.

The Dominion Lawsuit against Fox News Is Part of the War against Free Speech

In March 2021, Dominion Voting Systems—a company that produces electronic voting equipment and software—sued Fox New Channel for $1.6 billion. Dominion claimed the company had been harmed by allegedly false claims made by Fox program hosts and guests about Dominion’s role in alleged efforts to rig the 2020 US presidential election. In April 2023, Fox New Channel settled with Dominion for $787.6 million. Dominion still has other lawsuits pending against other parties, including Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell.
The Fox settlement over a defamation lawsuit comes less than a year after Alex Jones was ordered to pay $965 million in a lawsuit over things he said on his show about the Sandy Hook massacre. Both lawsuits were centered around merely saying things that other people didn’t like being said. Both suits were also centered on politically charged topics of public interest. Both lawsuits also demonstrated how defamation laws can be used to silence people and punish them for making controversial political statements. Moreover, it’s clear that both Jones and Fox news commentators were expressing these views as journalists.
