Cash Not Accepted

There once was a time when cash was the undisputed king. Merchants preferred cash payments over credit, and there were often incentives for paying with paper. I recall receiving lower gas prices when paying with cash, for example. It is increasingly common to see “no cash accepted” signs at establishments as the world moves toward a cashless society. Chinese Gold Demand Continued to Surge in February

After ending 2022 on an upward trend that continued into January, Chinese gold demand surged again in February as the economy continues to rebound from government-imposed COVID policies.
Gold withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) totaled 169 tons in February. This is a reflection of strong wholesale demand and signals an ongoing rebound in the world’s biggest gold market.
SGE withdrawals in February were up by 30 tons month-on-month and by a healthy 76 tons year-over-year. It was the strongest February for wholesale gold demand since 2014.

Credit Suisse Shares Crash as Banking Crisis Goes Global

Shares of Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse fell by more than 20 percent and the cost of insuring its bonds against default soared on Wednesday after its biggest shareholder said it would “absolutely not” provide additional support.
The decline brought shares to an all-time low. Concerns about the bank’s health and stability have been weighing on the stock for three months.

Russia On U.S. Drone Debacle: “We Consider This…A Provocation”

Russia is considering the United States drone debacle a “provocation.” The incident, which took place on Tuesday, in which an American drone crashed in the Black Sea, is causing a major uproar in the Russian government.
The U.S. and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) have ramped up their surveillance of Russia in both the Baltic and the Black Sea after the conflict in Ukraine escalated in February 2022. Washington has repeatedly confirmed providing Kyiv with advice, intelligence, and information needed to target the Russian military, as well as weapons, equipment, and money – all while insisting the US is not a party to the hostilities. On Monday, a nuclear-capable B-52 bomber of the US Strategic Command deliberately flew towards St. Petersburg, turning around only after reaching the range required to launch a cruise missile. -RT
Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said this was a “provocation” after being summoned to the State Department in Washington. “We consider this incident a provocation,” Antonov told reporters after the meeting. He said he told Donfried that U.S. drones, planes, and ships had no business being that close to Russian borders. “Could you imagine what the reaction of the U.S. media or the Pentagon would be if such a drone would appear near New York or San Francisco?” he asked, according to a report by RT.

On February 20th, heavy summer storms caused massive landslides in several north shore cities in my state. It’s a region famous for white beaches flanked by exuberant green slopes and mountains, with many nice hotels and fancy condominiums. Over 60 people died (including 18 children), and several are still missing.
