President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday setting in motion his long-promised effort to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, fulfilling a key campaign pledge to return control over education policy to the states.

The White House has confirmed that Trump will sign new executive orders, though officials have not disclosed their exact contents. However, NBC News and other reports indicate that one order will direct the Education Secretary to draft a comprehensive plan to eliminate the department, propose legislation to Congress for its closure, and shift its responsibilities to state and local governments.

Trump has made it clear that dismantling the federal education bureaucracy is a priority, frequently citing excessive spending, declining academic performance, and ideological biases in public schools. “We’ll have one person plus a secretary, and all the person has to do is, ‘Are you teaching English? Are you teaching arithmetic? Are you not teaching woke?’” Trump said during his campaign.

The president has nominated Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment and chair of the America First Policy Institute, to lead the department. If confirmed, McMahon is expected to oversee the transition as the administration seeks to downsize and ultimately shutter the agency.

Restructuring Underway, Employees Placed on Leave

As speculation about the department’s fate grows, dozens of Education Department employees were reportedly placed on administrative leave over the weekend as part of an internal restructuring effort. The Washington Post reported that Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) has already begun auditing federal education programs, echoing the administration’s broader push to rein in government spending.

Musk responded to reports of the audit on X, writing, “President @realDonaldTrump will succeed”, in reference to Ronald Reagan’s failed 1980s attempt to dismantle the department.

Policy Shifts: Parental Rights, School Choice, and Anti-Indoctrination

In addition to restructuring the department, Trump has already signed executive orders targeting hot-button education issues. These include:

  • Defending parental rights in school curriculum decisions.
  • Expanding universal school choice, allowing parents greater control over their children’s education.
  • Cutting federal funding for programs that promote critical race theory, gender ideology, or other “woke” content in K-12 schools.
  • Combating antisemitism by ensuring school policies align with constitutional protections.

Challenges in Congress, Historical Precedent

While Trump’s executive action will begin the process of dismantling the Education Department, it will not immediately eliminate it. Congress would need to pass legislation formally shutting it down, which remains a challenge given the need for a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate.

Efforts to abolish the Education Department date back to the Reagan administration, with conservatives long arguing that education policy should be controlled by states. However, no previous administration has taken concrete steps as drastic as Trump’s latest executive order.

Trump’s Vision for Education

Trump has argued that the department’s $20 billion budget has failed to improve student outcomes. “In total, American society pours more than $1 trillion a year into public education systems, but instead of being at the top of the list, we are literally right smack at the bottom,” he previously said.
