Israel is preparing to retaliate against Iran following Tehran’s recent missile attack on the Jewish state, with the potential for action before the U.S. presidential election on November 5. According to CNN, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is coordinating the response, but the upcoming U.S. election is reportedly not influencing the timing of the strike.

The missile barrage, launched by Iran on October 1, targeted major Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv. While most missiles were intercepted, one civilian, a Palestinian man, was killed. Iran claims the attack was retaliation for Israel’s targeted assassinations of high-ranking terrorist figures, including Hezbollah founder Hassan Nasrallah.

Netanyahu has pledged that Israel’s counterstrike will focus on military installations, steering clear of Iran’s oil refineries and nuclear facilities. The Biden-Harris administration has strongly opposed attacks on such sites, citing concerns over escalating tensions that could spark a wider regional conflict. Additionally, any disruption to oil production could raise U.S. gas prices just days before the election, potentially hurting Vice President Kamala Harris.

In response to the missile threat, the U.S. has bolstered Israel’s defense capabilities, deploying its advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system along with additional troops to the region. Despite these measures, Iran has issued warnings against further U.S. involvement.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have sent a letter to the Israeli government, urging it to provide more humanitarian aid to Gaza or risk the U.S. reconsidering its military support. However, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris did not sign the letter, and there have been no public statements from either leader threatening to cut off assistance.

As tensions mount between Israel and Iran, the global community watches closely, especially with the U.S. election just weeks away. Israel’s forthcoming actions could have profound implications for regional stability and U.S. foreign policy.
