Top Democrats have shown hesitance in committing to certifying a victory for former President Donald Trump if he wins the 2024 election, raising questions about the process of election certification. House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD), a prominent figure in election-related discussions, expressed uncertainty during an interview with Axios over whether he would support certifying a Trump win. His hesitation was shared by other leading Democrats, all citing concerns about electoral integrity.

Raskin, known for previously objecting to Trump’s electors following the 2016 election, stated, “If Trump won a free, fair and honest election, then we would obviously accept it. I definitely don’t assume that.” His comments follow the release of a video in which he speculated on the possibility of Congress disqualifying a Trump victory. Raskin even suggested that such an action could potentially risk “civil war.”

House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA) similarly indicated that Democrats would only certify a Trump win if “everything goes the way we expect it to,” underscoring the need to observe the circumstances surrounding the election before committing to certification. McGovern, like Raskin, objected to Trump’s electors in 2017, raising concerns about a double standard among Democrats regarding election certification.

Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who contested George W. Bush’s 2005 victory, shared her concerns about potential irregularities. She suggested that scrutiny would be essential in any election involving Trump. “We would have to, in any election… make sure that all the rules have been followed,” Schakowsky said, expressing concerns over potential “shenanigans.”

The refusal to definitively commit to certifying a possible Trump victory contrasts sharply with Democrats’ past criticisms of Republicans who questioned the 2020 election results. The Democratic position has attracted criticism from some who point out that several top Democrats, including Raskin, have a history of challenging election outcomes. For example, in 2017, numerous House Democrats objected to Trump’s electoral votes, with more than 60 lawmakers boycotting his inauguration.

Adding to the controversy, Raskin’s prior remarks during a panel discussion speculating on Congress’s ability to block Trump from assuming office have fueled debate over whether Democrats would accept a Trump win under any circumstances. The discussion has gained particular significance as the 2024 election approaches, with ongoing concerns over election integrity dominating the political landscape.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who has criticized election denialism in the past, has yet to take a public stance on whether she would certify a Trump victory. Her silence has drawn scrutiny, especially given her criticisms of Republicans for questioning the 2020 election.
