The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is allegedly removing crosses from churches and replacing pictures of Jesus Christ with those of President Xi Jinping. A study by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom reveals that the alterations also include editing religious texts and requiring clergy to deliver messages aligned with CCP ideology.
This campaign is described in the report as the “Sinicization of religion,” a process where religious practices are aligned to fit Chinese state mandates. This move is part of a broader attempt by the CCP to bring religious groups under its control, forcing them to register with state-controlled associations. For Catholic churches, this requires enrollment in the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China, managed by the CCP.

Practitioners who defy state regulations, such as underground Catholics, face significant persecution under the state’s anti-cult laws. Reports indicate harsh treatment for those who resist CCP directives, including imprisonment and indefinite detention without due process. Catholics who choose to worship through state-sanctioned organizations must adhere to strict CCP controls.
The report has also revisited the agreement Pope Francis entered into with the Chinese government in 2018, where cooperation in bishop selection was agreed upon. Disgraced former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, accused of sexually abusing boys, was part of the negotiations.
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom study highlights that the CCP has often bypassed consulting the Vatican in these selections and has detained bishops it sees as a threat, including Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen, who was convicted in 2022 for helping people arrested during Hong Kong’s 2019 democracy protests.
Christians also face challenges in the West. When churches are not being vandalized or set on fire in places like France or Canada, organizations like the Olympics mock Christianity openly.
