Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter/X, has issued a stark warning to Americans about the potential for increased censorship if Democrats win in upcoming elections. Musk’s comments come in the wake of a controversial decision by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moraes to suspend Twitter in Brazil, a move that has sparked international concern about the future of free speech online.

Musk’s warning was prompted by a tweet from a popular user, DogeDesigner, who suggested that Twitter/X could face suspension in the U.S. if Democrats regain power. In response, Musk tweeted, “Censorship is a certainty if Dems win,” highlighting his belief that free speech is under threat from the current political climate.
The situation in Brazil escalated on Friday when Justice de Moraes ordered the suspension of Twitter in the country, imposing a daily fine of nearly $9,000 for any individual caught using a VPN to access the platform. The suspension will remain in place until Twitter complies with the judge’s demands.
In his ruling, de Moraes accused Musk of showing “total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty and, in particular, for the judiciary,” arguing that the billionaire has positioned himself as a “supranational entity” immune to the laws of individual countries.
Anticipating the ban, Twitter/X’s Global Affairs account issued a statement on Thursday night in both English and Portuguese, outlining the company’s stance against what it called the judge’s “illegal orders” to censor political opponents. These opponents reportedly include a duly elected senator and a 16-year-old girl.
