Brazil’s Supreme Court orders a nationwide block on X following Elon Musk’s refusal to suspend accounts as per court demands, escalating tensions over free speech.By yourNEWS Media Newsroom

In a significant escalation of tensions between Brazil’s judiciary and social media giant X, a judge from Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered internet providers to block access to the platform across the country. The ruling came after Elon Musk, owner of X, defied court orders to suspend certain accounts, according to a report by the New York Times.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who issued the order, cited X’s refusal to suspend the accounts of several of his political opponents as the primary reason for the shutdown. In response, Xs Global Affairs team tweeted about the situation, noting that the accounts targeted by Moraes included a duly elected senator and a 16-year-old girl.

“These enemies include a duly elected Senator and a 16-year-old girl, among others,” the platform wrote.

This judicial action follows a series of confrontations between X and Brazilian authorities. Earlier this month, Musk decided to close X’s offices in Brazil after Moraes threatened the company over its non-compliance with his directives. Reports indicate that Moraes also froze the bank accounts of X’s Brazilian legal representative after she resigned, citing the judge’s demands as the reason.

The New York Times reported that Moraes justified the shutdown by pointing to X’s lack of a legal representative in Brazil. X’s attempts to challenge Moraes’ orders were either dismissed or ignored, leading to this unprecedented action.

“Our challenges against his manifestly illegal actions were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes’ colleagues on the Supreme Court are either unwilling or unable to stand up to him,” X stated in their tweet.

The controversy extends beyond X. Moraes has reportedly also frozen the finances of SpaceX’s Starlink, another Musk-owned company operating in Brazil, further intensifying the conflict between Musk and the Brazilian judiciary.
