BlackRock featured Thomas Matthew Crooks in a 2022 ad filmed at Bethel Park High School, where Crooks, later the Trump shooter, made two brief appearances.
The man who the police claim attempted to kill former President Donald J. Trump made a fleeting appearance in a TV commercial for global financial management BlackRock, which was recorded at the gunman’s school in Pennsylvania in 2022.

BlackRock announced on Sunday that it has taken the commercial—which includes footage shot in an economics teacher’s classroom at Bethel Park High School—out of distribution. During the 30-second commercial, Thomas Matthew Crooks, the gunman, makes two appearances on screen. In 2022, he was a senior at the school. He is shown speaking silently while seated at a desk in a classroom and donning a hooded sweatshirt of a dark hue.
At an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Mr. Crooks, 20, fired a semiautomatic rifle at Mr. Trump. Mr. Crooks was shot and killed by Secret Service agents. Two spectators were seriously hurt, and one spectator died. The motivation has not yet been established by the authorities reports The New York Times.
BlackRock acknowledged in a statement on Sunday that Mr. Crooks was featured in its campaign.
“In 2022, we ran an ad featuring a teacher from Bethel Park High School, in which several unpaid students briefly appeared in the background, including Thomas Matthew Crooks,” the company said. “We will make all video footage available to the appropriate authorities, and we have removed the video from circulation out of respect for the victims.”
“BlackRock strongly condemns political violence of any kind and will do our part to promote civility and unity in the country,” the corporation said, describing the attempted assassination as “abhorrent.”
The “AP and Honors Economics” ad was one of several web and television commercials that BlackRock released starting in the fall of 2022 to educate the public about the company’s activities.
The ad campaign was launched in response to Republican state leaders’ criticism of BlackRock for investing with environmental, social, and governance, or E.S.G. aims in mind. A Florida firefighter was featured in another commercial.
An on-screen image touting BlackRock’s management of public school teachers’ retirement plan assets was part of the advertisement set at Bethel Park High School. The phrase “Invested in the Future of Americans” was used to wrap it up.
