Sixty years ago today I was home sick from school, sitting on the floor in our living room sipping some soup which my mother had made me, watching TV with her as she sat, sewed, and watched her program, a CBS soap opera called As the World Turns. Then about fifteen minutes or so into the broadcast the soap opera was interrupted with a bulletin informing everyone that President Kennedy and Texas Governor Connally had been shot.

The rest of that gruesome weekend unfolded from there, and a long national nightmare began, as America descended into decade after decade of un-won wars, failing banks, a cracking financial system, and, hovering over it all, an unsolved murder that over the coming years would look more and more like a coup d’etat as researchers, not satisfied with the government’s narrative in the Warren Report, uncovered clue after clue.
There are still clues that need to be discovered, documents to be declassified, and above all, answers that need to be stated and justice that needs thereby to be served. The horrible shape of the country today – to borrow a metaphor and reapply it – is due to the basket of deplorables that constitute the political leadership class, the class that came into criminally acquired power on this day, sixty years ago, in Dallas, Texas, with the murder of John F. Kennedy Sr.
They still cling tightly and almost desperately to that power and the narrative that sustains it, and even more desperately cling to the remaining secrets in the undisclosed documents, unwilling to release them even now.
America declined that day – not with Watergate, not with Vietnam, not with Iran-Contra, not with the BCCI or Savings and Loan scandals or Ruby Ridge or Waco or 9/11, not even with the other assassinations of Dr. King, or Senator Robert F. Kennedy Sr. – to the status of a banana republic run from the shadows.
