Hamas Planted the Hospital Story to Inflame the Arab Community

When Israelis were awakened early Saturday morning to the sound of bombs, guns, and breaking glass, it was a wake-up call to the world. Hamas was out of control. In the hours that followed, some 2,500 fully armed terrorists descended on 22 southern Israeli towns and brutally and sadistically massacred 1,300 men, women, and children, including the elderly and even newborn babies. They visited atrocities on their bodies, mutilating them, decapitating them, burning them alive, and photographing them as trophies. And if that were not enough, they dragged off more than 200 men, women, and children into Gaza to be hostages. It was the worst assault against Jews since the Nazi holocaust, and it may well mark the opening salvo of a much wider war – perhaps the beginning of World War III.

There are no words to describe the indescribable: the sadistic cruelty, the atrocities that the terrorists carried out on the civilians in the Israeli towns and farming communities that morning. Seasoned soldiers and veteran members of the religious teams known as Zaka, whose job it is to recover all the body parts and bits of flesh that are left after a terrorist attack, even they were in shock when they saw the depravity of human destruction – the torture and murder of innocents – that they found in Israel’s border towns at the hands of Hamas monsters.

There is much that can be said about the sadism and cruelty of Hamas, but there is another story here as well. This is not only about Hamas’ hatred of the Jewish people of Israel or the same loathing shared by their partner organization, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ); it is also about their blatant disregard for their own people as well, and the threat to the world at large.

After Hamas’ gruesome attack on Israeli civilians, Israel dropped thousands of leaflets on Gaza civilians, warning them to leave northern Gaza because Israel’s planned ground and aerial offensive against Hamas would put them in danger. Hamas did everything possible to prevent them from leaving because the people Hamas was elected to represent and protect were more valuable to them as human shields.

Then, at about 10:00 pm local time on October 17, a massive explosion ripped through the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in the center of the Gaza Strip. The hospital was packed with men, women, and children seeking shelter from the Israeli bombing, knowing that Israel does not routinely target civilians or hospitals. It was a massive explosion that killed hundreds of patients and medical personnel, and it was a shock. But Hamas officials, barely waiting to catch their breath and eager to get their story out before anyone else, immediately accused Israel of carrying out an aerial strike against the hospital.

The news traveled fast, and although Israel responded quickly to disavow the charge, the damage had been done. Much of the world was ready to believe Hamas’ story, and the mainstream press ran as fast as they could to spread the story of “Israel’s atrocity” to the world. As word spread about the so-called ‘attack,’ demonstrations against Israel began to form in countries worldwide.

Israel denied all responsibility for the attack, and an IDF spokesman promised the public a swift investigation. Israel’s senior advisor to the Prime Minister, Mark Regev, quickly assured the world that “Israel does not target places like hospitals.” Barely two hours later, Israel officially announced: “From the analysis of the operational systems of the IDF, an enemy rocket barrage was carried out towards Israel, which passed through the vicinity of the hospital when it was hit . . . We did not strike their hospital.”

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog also issued a statement refuting the Palestinians’ claim and chastising the press for carrying the story without even trying to verify the facts. He said, “An Islamic Jihad missile has killed many Palestinians at a Gazan hospital – a place where lives should be saved. Shame on the media who swallow the lies of Hamas and Islamic Jihad – broadcasting a 21st-century blood libel around the globe. Shame on the vile terrorists in Gaza who willfully spill the blood of the innocent. Never before has the choice been clearer. Israel is standing against an enemy made of pure evil. If you stand for humanity – for the value of all human life – you stand with Israel.”
