On June 24, 2023 Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that he hammered out a deal in which Wagner Group chieftain Evgeny Prigozhin pledged to stop his mutiny against the Russian Ministry of Defense in exchange for receiving “security guarantees” for his troops.

“Evgeny Prigozhin accepted the proposal of President Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movement of armed men of Wagner in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate tension,” a statement from Lukashenko’s office highlighted.

Per the statement, Lukashenko and Prigozhin held discussions for the “whole day,” and “came to an agreement on the inadmissibility of unleashing a bloodbath on the territory of Russia.”

Lukashenko’s office revealed that the discussions were held in coordination with Russian President Vladimir Putin, continuing by noting that Prigozhin was given “an advantageous and acceptable option of resolving the situation, with security guarantees for the Wagner PMC fighters.”

The news came while a Wagner convoy approached Moscow, several hours following members of the private military company passed through the southern city of Rostov. In a series of video statements published since June 23, Prigozhin declared that he was moving on Moscow to confront Russian military officials that he believed were corrupt.

Prigozhin was incapable of gathering support from the Russian political class. Putin went as far as to accuse the Wagner leader of “backstabbing our country and our people,” while Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) launched a criminal investigation into Prigozhin for his decision to call “for an armed rebellion.”

Senior Russian political and military figures criticized Prigozhin’s mutiny, and urged Wagner fighters to cease and desist.

Right after Lukashenko’s announcement, Prigozhin announced that his troops were abandoning their push to confront Russian forces in Moscow and had ordered their return to their field camps.

Despite what pundits in the Collective West say, the Russian state is quite stable at the moment. It’s going to take a full-blown military reversal in Ukraine for it to lose complete control of power over the Russian federation.
