New York, NY — The death of 8-year-old Thomas Valva shocked the nation in 2020 when it was discovered his New York cop father was alleged to have beaten him and starved him before throwing him into an unheated garage where he froze to death. As the investigation unfolded, we learned that authorities were warned by multiple people on multiple occasions that NYPD officer Michael Valva was horrifically abusing his children, and, in a disgusting display of blue privilege, no one acted. In fact, the only actions taken were against the mother which helped Valva continue the abuse.

This week, Valva was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after he was found guilty last month.
“The torture that killed Thomas and endangered Anthony’s welfare was nothing short of evil,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a press release.
“This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking cases I have experienced in my nearly 30 years as a prosecutor. Thanks to the great work of my prosecutors and the SCPD, there is a small measure of justice in Michael Valva receiving the maximum sentence,” Tierney said. “However, no prison sentence is adequate for the cruel treatment this defendant inflicted on his own children.”
On the morning he was tortured to death by Valva, Thomas and his brother had no heat, no bathroom access, no mattress or blankets, and after waking up on the cold cement floor of the garage, Thomas had an accident and soiled his pants, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office.
Video footage showed Valva screaming at Thomas and sending him outside in the subfreezing temperatures, where he was hosed down with water — a sadistic act of torture. Due to the subzero temperatures and the fact that he was naked and soaked, Thomas lost consciousness and fell face-first onto a concrete patio several times.
The blunt force trauma and hyperthermia were too much for the small child and he died.
Valva allegedly washed the body of his autistic child in an attempt to warm the corpse, then lied to cops by claiming the boy fell in the driveway. On Jan. 24, 2020, Valva and his fiancee, Angela Pollina were arrested and charged with murder.
In 2020, after the couple’s arrest, Valva was quietly allowed to resign — to protect his pension and although the NYPD won’t be paying out his retirement, Valva was given back all the money he paid in, plus interest.
NYPD spokesperson Sgt. Jessica McRorie assured the public that this was acceptable and not the same thing as receiving a pension. “But that’s not the same as receiving a pension,” she told Patch.
