EPA’s “plant watering” deal and HHS’s social media spending among the axed projects, as Musk-led agency reaches $155 billion in total savings.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by President Donald Trump and spearheaded by Elon Musk, has announced the termination of 180 federal contracts with a total ceiling value of $3.3 billion, resulting in immediate taxpayer savings of $2.6 billion. The agency, established to dismantle redundant and inflated government expenditures, cited examples such as an $85,500 Environmental Protection Agency contract for “live plant maintenance services” and a $265,500 Department of Health and Human Services agreement for “social media monitoring subscription, training, and platform setup.”

“Contract update! Agencies terminated 180 wasteful contracts with a ceiling value of $3.3B and savings of $2.6B,” DOGE posted via its official X account, adding that EPA staff will now handle plant maintenance internally.

In one instance of fiscal recalibration, the Department of Veterans Affairs discontinued a contract charging $380,000 per month for minor website upkeep. That responsibility has since been reassigned to a single VA software engineer requiring just 10 hours per week.

As detailed on DOGE.gov, the department’s cumulative impact now stands at an estimated $155 billion in cost savings achieved through canceled leases, program reforms, regulatory reductions, fraud eliminations, and asset sales. The agency’s current results represent nearly $1,000 saved for every U.S. taxpayer.

Musk’s role as head of DOGE is defined as that of a Special Government Employee (SGE), limiting his annual service to 130 workdays. His appointment is expected to expire in late May unless extended by the Trump administration through legal or executive means.

While supporters hail DOGE’s performance as transformative, the agency faces resistance from entrenched interests. NBC News reports at least 11 lawsuits challenging DOGE’s reach and data practices, while a confidential pact among 14 Democrat-led states seeks to coordinate legal actions against DOGE and Musk personally.
