President Donald Trump has entered the final stages of his administration’s diplomatic push to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but has warned that U.S. involvement will cease if the parties continue to stall. The latest round of negotiations, which may include recognizing Crimea as Russian territory, has sparked sharp resistance from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who rejected the proposal outright.

The framework, according to multiple reports including The Washington Post and The New York Post, is being shaped during high-level talks in London this week. Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and national security adviser Keith Kellogg are meeting with foreign counterparts from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine. Witkoff may also travel to Moscow for additional talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky, however, quickly dismissed the idea of Crimea remaining under Russian control. “Crimea is our territory, the territory of the people of Ukraine. We have nothing to talk about on this topic,” Zelensky said. “As soon as we start talking about Crimea, about our sovereign territories, we enter the format of prolonging the war.”

Trump expressed his frustration over Ukraine’s refusal to compromise, reiterating that if progress is not made swiftly, the United States will disengage. “I will be giving you a full detail over the next three days,” he said, referring to the forthcoming peace plan. “But we had very good meetings on Ukraine, Russia … We’ll see how that works.”

According to BBC News, Trump warned reporters, “We’re not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end.” Secretary of State Rubio echoed this stance, saying, “Washington has other priorities to focus on” and that negotiations must show “clear signs of progress within days.”

Earlier this year, Trump declined to host Zelensky at the White House after what the president viewed as a dismissive tone from the Ukrainian leader during a visit to Washington. “He’s got to say ‘I want to make peace,’” Trump said. “He doesn’t have to stand there and say ‘Putin this and Putin that,’ all negative things.”

While many Western leaders remain committed to Ukrainian sovereignty, reports suggest that Trump’s peace framework could include a role for European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine if a ceasefire is achieved. Still, any resolution appears distant as Kyiv refuses to concede any territory.
