President cites “land confiscation and genocide” as justification for refusal to attend G20 summit in Johannesburg.

President Donald Trump confirmed the United States will not participate in the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, citing what he called the country’s “land confiscation and genocide” of white farmers. In a post to his Truth Social account, Trump denounced South Africa’s government for its policies targeting the Afrikaner minority and questioned the decision to hold the G20 summit there.

“How could we be expected to go to South Africa for the very important G20 Meeting when Land Confiscation and Genocide is the primary topic of conversation?” Trump posted. “They are taking the land of white Farmers, and then killing them and their families. The Media refuses to report on this. The United States has held back all contributions to South Africa. Is this where we want to be for the G20? I don’t think so!”

The Group of 20 (G20) consists of 19 countries and the European Union and African Union, together representing approximately 80% of the world’s economic output and two-thirds of the global population. South Africa assumed the G20 presidency in late 2024 and is scheduled to host the next summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, when the presidency will pass to the United States.

The Trump administration’s decision to boycott the summit was initially announced in February. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the time that he would not attend any G20 events hosted by South Africa. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also declined to attend meetings of G20 finance ministers, citing scheduling conflicts in Washington. “We’re not going to coddle anti-Americanism,” Rubio said during a press appearance.

In an unprecedented shift in U.S. policy, Trump’s administration has actively criticized post-Apartheid policies targeting white South Africans, particularly Afrikaner farmers. Early in February, Trump signed an executive order establishing a special refugee resettlement pathway in the United States for white South Africans. The order cited South Africa’s “seizure of ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation” and government policies described as efforts to “dismantle equal opportunity” in employment, education, and public institutions.
