Federal Judge James Boasberg has drawn sharp criticism from President Donald Trump and his allies amid his oversight of multiple high-profile cases involving the Trump administration. The scrutiny intensified after Boasberg issued a March 15 order halting deportations of illegal immigrants under a wartime provision, prompting Trump to publicly call for his impeachment.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Boasberg of undermining his administration’s enforcement efforts, writing, “This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!!” He added, “We don’t want vicious, violent, and demented criminals… in our country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

Boasberg, the current chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, has presided over matters ranging from immigration to litigation involving leaked internal communications. His background includes a 2011 appointment to the bench by former President Barack Obama and a prior term as presiding judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA), where he was selected by Chief Justice John Roberts, according to a Fox News report.

Critics, including Mike Davis, president of the Article III Project, argue that Boasberg represents a judicial establishment resistant to the Trump administration. “The D.C. federal judges are in a cozy little club, and they protect their own,” Davis said, highlighting Boasberg’s ties to fellow legal elites, including a reported Yale University roommate relationship with Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Boasberg, a native of Washington, D.C., has previously served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and as an associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. His judicial career includes experience at several prominent law firms and academic credentials from Yale and Oxford.

Tensions escalated further when Boasberg extended his deportation-blocking restraining order through April 12. Trump responded on March 30 with another Truth Social post accusing Boasberg of thwarting voters’ will and endangering public safety. “If it was up to District Judge Boasberg and other Radical Left Judges, nobody would be removed,” Trump wrote, referencing individuals entering the country under President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

Amid criticism that he is deliberately positioning himself on Trump-related cases, Boasberg was recently assigned to a lawsuit involving leaked administration Signal chats. Responding to accusations of bias, Boasberg said during a March 27 hearing that the assignment was determined randomly by the court’s docket system.

“That’s how it works, and that’s how all cases continue to be assigned in this court,” he stated.

Trump allies remain unconvinced. Davis, in a post on social media, warned of broader consequences for the judiciary, writing, “Judge Jeb Boasberg is lighting on fire his legitimacy… Let’s hope the Chief Justice doesn’t light the entire federal judiciary’s legitimacy on fire by siding with his personal buddy Jeb.”

Following Trump’s call for impeachment, Chief Justice Roberts issued a rare public statement pushing back against the idea. “Impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said, reinforcing that such disputes should be addressed through appellate review.
