Gretchen Whitmer, Bill Maher – Is civility making a comeback?

As an early teen, George Washington hand-copied the “Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation,” which was written in the 1600s by Jesuit Priests. He studied all 110 rules often and put them into practice whenever a situation called for it.

The first rule states that “Every action in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those present.” Washington stood by this rule both in his public and private life.

But it would seem that the rules of civility have fallen by the wayside in recent years, especially in the political arena. While members of Congress have been cheering the physical destruction of Tesla, still others have cheered on its economic collapse as a company. There’s not much civility in that.

However, we still ask the question, is civility making a comeback?

Recently, while signing Executive Orders in the Oval Office and taking questions from reporters, Trump acknowledged a visit from Michigan Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer. As he welcomed her to the White House, he commented on what a great job she was doing as Governor. He called her a “very good person,” and committed his support in what he called a “bipartisan effort” to see the Selfridge Air Force base in full operation again.

There was some speculation that Whitmer did not want to be seen in the Oval Office while receiving such niceties from Trump as she seemingly shielded her face from cameras with a binder she held.

Did she not want her base to think she was there to kiss the ring or to be seen as friendly with Trump?

It’s hard to tell. Nonetheless, civility ruled the day. Trump, in a moment of pleasant politeness, treated Whitmer with dignity and respect.

Recently Democrat comedian Bill Maher spoke about his visit with President Trump and reported a similar outcome – that trump was respectful, kind, funny, and politely listened to Maher’s criticisms.
