The United States has proposed a temporary 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine following negotiations between American and Ukrainian officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The proposal follows Ukraine’s acceptance of the ceasefire deal on Tuesday, a move that has now placed pressure on Moscow to respond.

“We’ll have contact with [Russia] today, there’s already been contact at different levels with counterparts, different members of the administration, and that will continue,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow is carefully reviewing the ceasefire proposal but refrained from immediate commentary. Russian officials had previously voiced concerns that any temporary truce could serve as a tactical pause, allowing Ukraine to regroup and rearm. Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently stated that a negotiated settlement must guarantee long-term security rather than provide a strategic advantage to Kyiv.
Rubio emphasized that the initiative is now in Russia’s hands, stating that Ukraine is prepared to halt battlefield activity in exchange for reciprocal actions by Russia. He warned that failure to reach an agreement would necessitate a reevaluation of U.S. strategy. “There is no military solution to this conflict,” he said.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Ukraine’s past breaches of agreements, arguing that its government had engaged in self-sabotage during previous negotiations. Lavrov also suggested that the U.S. is using the ceasefire proposal to regain influence, particularly under the Trump administration. “It’s an indication that they want to raise the stakes and they are preparing something to pressure the Donald Trump administration back into some aggressive action against Russia,” Lavrov stated.
As part of the deal, Ukraine is seeking security guarantees against future Russian attacks, although specific details remain undisclosed. European involvement has been hinted at, with speculation that Russia may demand the removal of sanctions and the return of frozen financial assets. Rubio also acknowledged that Ukraine may have to cede some territory lost in the war.
Despite the ceasefire, the U.S. has simultaneously lifted a pause on military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Critics argue that the move effectively allows Kyiv to continue fighting under a different pretext.
Political commentator Tucker Carlson discussed the geopolitical implications of the ceasefire during an interview with Col. Doug Macgregor, where Macgregor condemned the renewed military assistance to Ukraine.
Both British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have publicly praised the ceasefire initiative. The British government has claimed it played a key role in crafting the agreement, with the BBC reporting that national security officials from the U.K., U.S., Germany, and France coordinated efforts to shape the proposal.
