STRATEGIC ANALYSIS: Understanding the Vulnerability of U.S. Bases Located Near Iran

from 21st Century Wire:

The existing U.S. military bases in the Middle East may be at risk in the event of a significant conflict with Iran. This is a situation that both the U.S. and its regional allies may need to confront, particularly if Trump succumbs to Netanyahu’s invitation to initiate another intricate military engagement in West Asia and the gulf region as part of  the U.S.  “Israel First Policy.”

A conflict of this nature would significantly depend on the deployment of American strike aircraft, tankers, and air and missile defense systems. However, the positioning of U.S. strike aircraft in the Middle East is primarily along the southern coast of the Arabian Gulf, making them susceptible to Iranian missile strikes (including hypersonic missile strikes) that could reach these locations in five minutes or less.

It’s also worth noting that in case of US bases in Iraq, the initial wave of Iranian missile salvos could later be followed later on by ground assaults by Iraqi Hash’d/PMU militias, and later by Iranian fighter-bomber aircraft strikes on those bases.

The sheer vulnerability is intensified by the immobility of the refuelling and rearming facilities at these bases, rendering them targets for Iranian air assaults that could potentially bypass U.S. defenses at critical sites along the Gulf.

In short, this would be a disaster from which the U.S. would never recover from in the region, potentially ending its permanent military footing there.

The recent increase in tensions in the West Asia region, characterized by Israel’s demonstration of military strength in pursuit of its Greater Israel agenda, poses a significant threat to global peace. However, the character of the threat in this region has evolved considerably since the establishment of U.S. military bases many years ago. The geographical conditions suggest that a coordinated assault by Iran could potentially surpass the defenses of numerous U.S. military bases in the region.

This raises the fundamental question: just how vulnerable are the massive array of U.S. bases located around West Asia to a counterstrike by Iran?
