Romania’s Central Election Bureau has officially barred presidential candidate Călin Georgescu from participating in the upcoming election, citing violations of extremism laws. The decision comes ahead of the second-round vote scheduled for May 8 and 22, following the annulment of the December 2024 election in which Georgescu won. Authorities claimed that Russian interference influenced the initial vote, a charge Georgescu has repeatedly denied.

In response, Georgescu condemned the decision on X, declaring, “A direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide! I have one message left! If democracy in Romania falls, the entire democratic world will fall! This is just the beginning. It’s that simple! Europe is now a dictatorship, Romania is under tyranny!”
