Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that former President Jair Bolsonaro will stand trial for allegedly attempting to subvert the results of the country’s 2022 presidential election, marking a significant escalation in the legal pursuit of the conservative leader and his allies.

Bolsonaro, who questioned the integrity of the election after his loss to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, responded to the ruling by asserting the case is politically motivated. “It seems they have something personal against me,” he told reporters. “A coup would typically have troops, have guns and have leadership.”
The court’s decision comes more than a year after Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília on January 8, 2023, following Lula’s inauguration. The incident, reminiscent of the January 6 Capitol breach in the United States, led to widespread arrests and government crackdowns on protesters, prompting concerns among Bolsonaro’s backers about diminishing civil liberties.
“Brazil has lost the right to freedom of expression and to demonstrate,” said one Bolsonaro supporter. “There must be amnesty for these people who do not commit crimes.”
A legislative proposal seeking to pardon individuals involved in the January 8 riots has gained momentum, with several Brazilian lawmakers voicing their support for clemency.
Bolsonaro, who spent a brief period in Florida in early 2023, returned to Brazil this week to observe proceedings in person. His return coincides with growing speculation that the court is accelerating the case in an effort to disqualify him from seeking office in Brazil’s 2026 presidential election.
Critics argue the trial is being driven by political motivations rather than evidence, warning it could be used to preemptively sideline the former president before he can mount a comeback campaign. Bolsonaro’s base, which has remained fiercely loyal, views the charges as part of a broader attempt by pro-globalist factions within the government to prevent a nationalist resurgence.
