The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeing a substantial leadership shake-up as incoming Director Kash Patel faces confirmation hearings before the Senate. Reports indicate that six out of seven Executive Assistant Directors have been dismissed or ordered to resign, along with 25 Special Agents in Charge, marking one of the most extensive leadership purges in recent agency history.

According to CNN, the move comes as part of a broader effort to restructure the FBI, with newly appointed officials expected to assume leadership roles in the coming days. The dismissals follow recent firings at multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

“At least six FBI leaders have been told they must resign by Monday,” the report stated, adding that the changes are being implemented under new directives from the Trump administration.

Among those removed is Spencer Evans, the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Las Vegas Field Office, who recently oversaw the investigation into a Green Beret’s alleged suicide bombing at a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel on New Year’s Day. Evans was also known for denying FBI whistleblower Kyle Seraphin a religious exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine, which ultimately led to Seraphin’s indefinite suspension.

Seraphin, speaking on a podcast, confirmed that the leadership changes extend beyond the six Executive Assistant Directors, stating that 25 out of 56 SACs were dismissed as part of the agency’s restructuring.

“There’s a potential that Kash Patel could be the most loved FBI director by the actual people of the FBI,” Seraphin told NBC News. “He could be the real thing that Jim Comey pretended to be.”

The shake-up is also affecting members of “The Suspendables”, a group of former FBI agents who had previously spoken out about alleged bias within the agency. Among them is Garrett O’Boyle, who was suspended in September 2022 after blowing the whistle on the FBI’s use of “threat tags” to track pro-life activists after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Another agent, Steve Friend, raised concerns about how the agency classified domestic terrorism cases, as well as tactics used against January 6 defendants.

The widespread dismissals follow the resignation of Deputy Director Paul Abbate, who stepped down earlier this week after serving nearly three decades at the agency. The sudden leadership changes have sparked internal debates about potential political influences over the bureau.

“There is concern about the potential injection of partisan politics at the top of an agency that has traditionally had only one political appointee: the director himself,” NBC News reported.
