President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that government-provided security for Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former head of the nation’s COVID-19 response, has ended, citing the limits of government support for former officials. Speaking during a press briefing in North Carolina, Trump addressed media reports on the matter, urging Fauci to arrange his own security if needed.

“When you work for the government, at some point your security detail comes off, and you know, you can’t have them forever,” Trump said. He emphasized that such measures are standard for former officials and noted that other individuals had also lost their security details.

Fauci, who retired in August from his role at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), had been provided federal security during his tenure due to threats he received while leading the nation’s pandemic response. According to CNN, the NIH ceased providing security for Fauci on Thursday, prompting him to hire private security.

Trump dismissed concerns about potential risks to Fauci, stating, “Fauci made a lot of money. They all did … Certainly, I would not take responsibility.” Trump similarly defended ending security for other former officials, including his first-term national security adviser John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and ex-Iran envoy Brian Hook.

The decision has sparked debate, given Fauci’s high-profile role during the pandemic and the hostility he faced from critics. Despite widespread praise from public health experts, Fauci became a polarizing figure among Republicans, including Trump, who often clashed with him over the pandemic’s handling.

While some view the removal of government security as a routine measure for retired officials, others have raised concerns about ensuring the safety of individuals who have faced public threats. Trump, however, reiterated that former officials could afford private security, adding, “We took some off other people too, but you can’t have a security detail for the rest of your life because you work for government.”

As the debate continues, the transition from public to private security highlights the broader challenges of balancing government resources and personal safety for high-profile figures.
