Rising fears of stricter immigration enforcement prompt illegal immigrants to leave voluntarily ahead of Trump’s inauguration.

A wave of self-deportations is being reported across the United States as illegal immigrants weigh their options before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office. The phenomenon has been driven by Trump’s strong stance on immigration enforcement and promises of strict measures to curb illegal entry into the country.

The Associated Press noted that self-deportation aligns with Trump’s immigration goals by reducing the burden on federal resources. Among those leaving is Michel Bérrios, a former Nicaraguan activist, who cited fear of uncertainty and a perceived lack of compassion in the U.S. as reasons for her departure.

“The reasons I left the United States are not only the uncertainty you’re living with as [Trump] returns to power but also because it’s a country where people don’t have a sense of humanism,” Bérrios told the AP.

Self-Deportations on the Rise

In Denver, local advocacy groups and attorneys reported an increase in calls from distressed migrants considering self-deportation, seeking asylum in Canada, or surrendering to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). One such case involved a Venezuelan man requesting assistance to return to Colombia, as reported by the Denver Post.

“If you want to self-deport, you should self-deport because we know who you are, and we’re gonna come and find you,” said Tom Homan, Trump’s pick to lead ICE, in a widely shared statement.

Asylum System Strained

Alberto Bejarano, a Venezuelan asylum seeker, highlighted issues within the asylum system, noting that fraudulent claims create delays for legitimate applicants. Speaking to the Denver Post, Bejarano said:

“Asylum is for people who [are] being personally persecuted by their government… not because your country is in bad shape or you have a bad economical situation.”

Broader Implications

Critics argue that unchecked illegal immigration imposes significant financial and social costs on American taxpayers, including self-deportation expenses. Images from the border, such as those shared by Jason Jones, show the strain on resources and the environmental toll of unmanaged migration flows.

The Trump administration’s strong immigration stance has already begun shaping policy outcomes before the president-elect takes office, signaling a decisive shift in federal immigration enforcement strategies. As self-deportations increase, the coming months will reveal the broader impact of these policies on communities across the nation.
