President Donald Trump has reached a $25 million settlement with Meta Platforms, resolving a lawsuit over the company’s suspension of his social media accounts following the January 6, 2021, protests at the U.S. Capitol. Under the terms of the agreement, $22 million will go toward the establishment of Trump’s presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees and compensation for co-plaintiffs who joined the case.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, did not admit to any wrongdoing in the settlement, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The lawsuit, which was filed in 2021, challenged Meta’s decision to suspend Trump’s accounts, alleging political censorship and bias against conservatives.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg played a direct role in the settlement process. Zuckerberg reportedly dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November 2024 following Trump’s election victory. During the dinner, Trump allegedly raised the lawsuit, prompting further discussions. In January 2025, Zuckerberg returned to Mar-a-Lago for a full day of mediation with the former president, ultimately leading to the settlement.

Years of Allegations Against Meta for Censorship

The settlement comes amid long-standing accusations against Meta for allegedly censoring conservative voices and limiting the reach of pro-Trump content. Following the 2016 election, Facebook reportedly reduced traffic to pro-Trump websites by as much as 93%, affecting independent media outlets critical of mainstream narratives.

The allegations were part of Missouri v. Biden, a lawsuit filed in May 2022 by then-Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry. The case alleged that federal agencies colluded with Big Tech to suppress content on a range of issues, including:

  • Hunter Biden’s laptop scandal
  • Election integrity concerns in 2020
  • COVID-19 vaccine skepticism
  • Discussion on the origins of COVID-19

As part of this legal effort, The Gateway Pundit provided evidence in 2022 detailing how Facebook and Twitter had systematically censored conservative media. The Supreme Court heard the case in 2024 but later sent it back to a lower court, where it remains ongoing.

Impact of Trump’s Return to the White House

With Trump back in the Oval Office, this settlement could signal a broader legal push against Big Tech firms accused of suppressing conservative viewpoints. The lawsuit’s resolution may be just the beginning of further challenges to online censorship that flourished during previous administrations.

“This settlement is likely the first step in holding Big Tech accountable for years of political censorship,” a source close to the matter told The Wall Street Journal.

While Meta has avoided admitting liability, Trump’s legal victory highlights the ongoing battle over free speech and platform moderation policies in the United States. Many expect Trump’s administration to increase scrutiny of tech giants and pursue legislative or executive measures to limit their ability to suppress political content.
