House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) unveiled a new select subcommittee on Wednesday to investigate the events surrounding January 6, 2021, pledging to reveal the full truth behind the Capitol breach. In a statement, Johnson said, “House Republicans are proud of our work so far in exposing the false narratives peddled by the politically motivated January 6 Select Committee during the 117th Congress, but there is still more work to be done. We are establishing this Select Subcommittee to continue our efforts to uncover the full truth that is owed to the American people.”
The subcommittee will be chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) under the jurisdiction of the House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). Loudermilk expressed his commitment to identifying the security and intelligence failures that contributed to the events of January 6.
“What happened at the Capitol that day was the result of a series of intelligence, security, and leadership failures at multiple levels within numerous entities,” Loudermilk said in a statement. “I appreciate Speaker Johnson’s commitment to our work, and I am looking forward to working with Chairman Jim Jordan to continue to uncover all the facts and begin the arduous task of making needed reforms to ensure this level of security failure may never happen again.”
According to reports, the subcommittee will have authority to investigate actions taken by FBI officials and other federal entities in connection with the Capitol events. This marks a significant step in House Republicans’ ongoing efforts to address allegations of politicization within federal agencies.
Jim Jordan noted that the subcommittee would work closely with individuals nominated by President Trump for leadership roles in the Department of Justice, including attorney general nominee Pam Bondi, deputy attorney general nominee Todd Blanche, and FBI director nominee Kash Patel. Jordan stated that collaboration with these appointees is expected to be key in advancing the subcommittee’s work.
The previous January 6 Select Committee has faced significant criticism from Republicans, who have alleged that the committee suppressed critical evidence, including testimony that former President Donald Trump had authorized National Guard troops to be on standby during the Capitol protests. Claims of bias and false testimonies from witnesses, such as Cassidy Hutchinson, have also been highlighted in GOP critiques.
This new panel, Johnson said, aims to provide an accurate account of the events, addressing the failures of intelligence, leadership, and security that contributed to the breach of the Capitol. Republicans view this as a crucial step toward holding those responsible for such failures accountable and restoring public trust in federal institutions.
