Between January 17 and January 19, Border Patrol recorded 3,908 encounters across the U.S., including 1,288 on January 17, 1,266 on January 18, and 1,354 on January 19. However, following President Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, those numbers plummeted to 1,073 on his first day in office, 736 on January 21, and 714 on January 22 — a total of 2,523 encounters over three days.
While border numbers tend to fluctuate on a daily and weekly basis, this immediate decline comes as the Trump administration has rolled out a series of tough border security measures. Upon taking office, Trump declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, deployed military forces to assist border patrol operations, and ended the use of the CBP One app for processing migrants at ports of entry via humanitarian parole.
Additionally, the administration launched a nationwide mass deportation operation, empowering ICE agents to conduct enforcement actions in multiple states and cities. Trump also rescinded restrictions placed on ICE by the Biden administration, ordered a review of parole programs, and expanded the use of expedited removal for recently arrived illegal immigrants.
In another decisive move, the administration restarted construction of the border wall and reinstated the Remain-in-Mexico policy, which requires asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their cases are adjudicated in U.S. courts.
One of Trump’s most controversial actions was an executive order ending birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants, triggering immediate legal challenges from nearly two dozen Democratic-led states.
While the data is still preliminary, the significant decrease in encounters has sparked discussions about a potential “Trump effect.” Experts and policymakers speculate that migrants may be deterred from attempting to cross the border due to the perception that the new administration’s policies will make entry and residency far more difficult.
