President-elect Donald Trump has tasked Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services, with investigating the potential connection between vaccines and autism, a move aimed at addressing a national health crisis. Trump announced the initiative during an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, where he reiterated the need for transparency and accountability in understanding the alarming rise in autism diagnoses.

Trump, citing data from the CDC, highlighted the stark increase in autism prevalence, noting it had risen from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 in recent years. “If you look at the numbers from 25 years ago compared to today, it’s staggering. Something is going on,” Trump said.

The president-elect’s comments come amid growing public concern over autism and its potential causes. A March 2023 study revealed a tripling of autism diagnoses over 16 years, with disparities impacting children of color disproportionately. Researchers also identified significant gaps in early detection and intervention, exacerbated by disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the interview, Welker questioned Trump on his decision to involve Kennedy, a known vaccine skeptic, in such a high-profile investigation. She referenced scientific studies that deny a link between vaccines and autism, but Trump stood firm, emphasizing the importance of exploring all possibilities.

“I’m not against vaccines,” Trump said. “The polio vaccine is one of the greatest achievements in public health. But we need to investigate everything to ensure we’re doing the right thing for our children.”
