Uruguay’s outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou and Paraguay’s conservative President Santiago Peña followed in second and third place, with approval ratings of 49.8% and 46.7%, respectively. The survey underscores a growing preference for center-right and libertarian leadership amidst political and economic turbulence in the region.
Milei’s approval ratings saw a consistent rise throughout 2024, increasing from 50.2% in November, when he was ranked second, to surpass Lacalle Pou in December. This marks a significant rebound from earlier polls, such as September’s results, where Milei ranked sixth.
Taking office in December 2023, Milei implemented bold economic reforms aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s struggling economy. His “shock therapy” policies reduced inflation from 25.5% in January to 2.4% in November. Measures such as cutting government spending and eliminating the “inclusive dollar tax” on foreign currency transactions have been central to his strategy to curb hyperinflation.
While Milei enjoys growing approval, leftist leaders in the region have seen significant declines in popularity. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Peru’s Dina Boluarte ranked at the bottom of the poll. Boluarte, who assumed office following Pedro Castillo’s failed coup attempt, faced the highest disapproval rating at 76.4%. Maduro, following a widely contested election and subsequent crackdown on dissent, closed 2024 with a 67.4% disapproval rating.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro also suffered a drop in favorability, with 39.9% approval compared to 56.6% disapproval. Media reports have highlighted a downward trend in Petro’s popularity throughout 2024, reflecting regional dissatisfaction with far-left governance.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva faced mixed reactions, with a 44.3% approval rating against 53.1% disapproval. Despite his efforts to rally leftist solidarity in South America, Lula’s policies have drawn criticism domestically and abroad.
