Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and longtime advocate for vaccine safety, emerged as a prominent figure within the Trump campaign following his endorsement. His potential appointment to HHS signals a shift in the federal agency’s direction, particularly in areas such as nutrition policy and public health oversight.
Speaking on his vision for the department, Kennedy has voiced strong criticism of existing regulatory practices at agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “In some categories, their entire departments, like the nutrition department in the FDA, they have to go. They’re not doing their job. They’re not protecting our kids,” Kennedy said in a recent interview.
Kennedy also cited disparities in food safety regulations, highlighting the stark difference in ingredient standards between the United States and other countries. “Why do we have Froot Loops in this country that have 18 or 19 ingredients, and you go to Canada, and it’s got two or three?” he questioned.
Kennedy’s nomination is expected to face significant scrutiny, given his history of controversial views on vaccines and public health measures. However, supporters argue that his appointment could bring much-needed reform to agencies often criticized for being too aligned with corporate interests.
