Moscow has issued a stern warning to the West, claiming long-range missile strikes inside Russian territory by Ukraine would mark the direct involvement of the U.S. and its allies in the conflict, potentially escalating tensions further.

Russia has responded sharply to reports that the United States has authorized Ukraine to launch long-range missile strikes deep into Russian territory. On Monday, Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, described the move as a significant escalation, warning that it could change the very nature of the ongoing conflict.

Using long-range missiles against Russian targets would signal the “direct participation of the United States and its satellites in hostilities against Russia,” Zakharova said, according to RT. She added, “Russia’s response will be adequate and tangible.”

Rising Tensions

The controversy follows reports that President Joe Biden had greenlit Ukraine’s use of advanced U.S. Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a range of up to 190 miles. These weapons could target key areas in Russia, potentially altering the dynamics of the conflict.

Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia’s State Duma, added to the sharp rhetoric on Monday, calling President Biden an “elderly, end-of-life leader” with dangerous ambitions. He accused Biden of seeking to take America and possibly the world into a broader conflict. “If this happens, Russia will be forced to respond,” Volodin said, as reported by RT.

He further hinted at the deployment of previously unused weapons systems if the conflict escalates.

Moscow Seeks Clarification

While tensions continue to rise, Russia’s leadership expressed skepticism about the accuracy of reports regarding the Biden administration’s policy shift. “It is not yet known whether these claims are based on official sources,” RT noted, citing statements from Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has so far refrained from directly commenting on the developments. On Monday, he met with Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-installed leader of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, at the Kremlin, as captured by Getty Images.

Potential Consequences

This development raises concerns about further escalation in the region. Putin has repeatedly warned that the use of Western-provided long-range weapons against Russia could provoke severe retaliation, including the deployment of nuclear options.

As the international community watches closely, Russia’s warnings underscore the volatile state of the conflict and the potential ramifications of new military strategies involving advanced weaponry.
