In the nearly two years since his retirement, Dr. Anthony Fauci has received $15 million in taxpayer-funded security services. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by watchdog group Open the Books reveal that Fauci, who officially left his position as National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director in December 2022, has continued to benefit from U.S. Marshals Service protection, complete with a security detail and chauffeur, all funded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

This protection agreement, spelled out in a Memorandum of Understanding between HHS and the U.S. Marshals Service, covers the period from January 4, 2023, through September 20, 2024, with a provision for extension. According to the MOU, the $15 million includes salaries for security personnel, transportation costs, and equipment—all provided to a private citizen no longer serving the government.

The U.S. Marshals Service, which usually focuses on tracking down fugitives and protecting judges, has struggled with budget shortfalls in recent years. Following an Inspector General report highlighting resource limitations, the agency recently requested an additional $28.1 million to better protect federal judges. Despite these constraints, resources have been diverted to cover security for Fauci. At the same time, other public figures, like former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have had to rely on private funds for their security needs.
