Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday that his government has agreed to a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, marking a significant development in the more than year-long conflict that began in October 2023. The agreement is set to be finalized on Wednesday, with a full-scale ceasefire taking effect immediately thereafter.

“I have said many times that a good agreement is an agreement that can be enforced, and we will enforce it,” Netanyahu stated during his address, signaling Israel’s commitment to ensuring compliance with the terms of the deal.

Under the proposed agreement, Israel will withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon within 60 days, allowing Lebanese forces to re-establish control over the region. In return, Hezbollah is expected to pull its fighters away from the Israel-Lebanon border, according to reports.

Netanyahu highlighted three key reasons for accepting the ceasefire at this juncture: giving Israeli forces time to recuperate; isolating Hamas from Hezbollah; and shifting focus to the looming threat posed by Iran.

“The length of the ceasefire will depend on what happens in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said, warning that Israel retains the right to take military action if Hezbollah violates the agreement or attempts to rearm. “With the full understanding of the United States, we are preserving full military freedom of action.”

The ceasefire comes amid heightened tensions across the region following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas that killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel. Hezbollah escalated its aggression shortly after, resulting in cross-border skirmishes and intensifying hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

While the ceasefire represents a significant de-escalation, tensions remain high. Israel continues its conflict with Hamas in Gaza, where attempts to negotiate a ceasefire have repeatedly failed. Additionally, Israel and Iran have engaged in direct confrontations, including drone and missile strikes, further destabilizing the region.
