A House Democrat suggests forming a shadow government to oppose President-elect Trump’s administration and policies.

Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-NC) has proposed the establishment of a “shadow cabinet” to counter President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, an idea he detailed in an op-ed published in the Washington Post and during a speech on the House floor. Nickel argued that borrowing from the British system, where opposition parties form shadow cabinets to hold the government accountable, could serve as a necessary check against what he described as “extreme MAGA attacks on our government.”

“Last week stung,” Nickel said, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris’s election loss. “As Democrats, we simply failed to convince the American people we have better ideas to solve their problems, but we do. Now we need to dust ourselves off and get ready to fight.” He explained that the shadow cabinet would challenge Trump’s policies and provide alternative solutions to address pressing national issues.
It’s time we borrow an idea from our British friends. My proposal for a shadow cabinet isn’t just about holding our political leaders accountable – it strengthens and protects our democracy.

Nickel suggested that Senator-elect Adam Schiff should serve as the shadow Attorney General to counteract Trump’s nominee Matt Gaetz. He also proposed Congresswoman Jahana Hayes as shadow Education Secretary to defend public education. “If Trump attempts to weaponize the justice system against his political opponents, we need leaders like Adam Schiff to stand up for independent justice,” Nickel asserted.
To address foreign policy concerns, Nickel nominated Rep. Greg Meeks as shadow Secretary of State to safeguard international alliances. He also suggested that Rep. Rosa DeLauro could serve as shadow Secretary of Health and Human Services to defend reproductive rights. This, despite Trump’s position that decisions on abortion should remain at the state level.
Nickel further expressed concerns about environmental policies, nominating Rep. Kathy Castor as shadow head of the Environmental Protection Agency. He warned that Trump’s pick, former Rep. Lee Zeldin, might weaken environmental protections.
