As Hurricane Helene wreaks havoc across the southeastern United States, multiple whistleblowers have stepped forward, alleging severe mismanagement within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). According to a bombshell letter from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FEMA withheld crucial pre-disaster funds and failed to issue deployment orders to first responders, leaving thousands of Americans stranded in the storm’s wake.

In his letter, Rep. Gaetz outlined a series of complaints from whistleblowers within federal, state, and local emergency management agencies. These allegations accuse FEMA of not only mismanaging funds but also diverting resources away from disaster relief. “Hundreds if not thousands” of first responders and service members were left in limbo, sitting idle in hotels while awaiting deployment orders, according to the Daily Mail.
The allegations come on the heels of Mayorkas’ own admission that FEMA lacks the funds to make it through the remainder of the hurricane season. This revelation raises questions, especially since Congress recently approved a $20 billion emergency package for FEMA. Whistleblowers claim that much of these funds have been diverted to other priorities, such as providing aid to illegal immigrants, through programs like the “Shelter and Services Program.”
Rep. Gaetz did not hold back in his criticism of the agency. In his letter to Mayorkas, he stated, “This news comes after FEMA has spent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on migrants due to Border Czar Kamala Harris’ open border instead of prioritizing funding for Americans impacted by disasters.” The congressman also highlighted that first responders were deployed to states like North Carolina, only to be left waiting in hotels without orders as the disaster unfolded.
The whistleblowers claim that FEMA’s mismanagement has left service members, federal employees, and other first responders in an untenable situation. They also accuse FEMA of withholding pre-disaster aid, exacerbating the emergency caused by Hurricane Helene. Rep. Gaetz’s office confirmed that “hundreds, if not thousands” of service members have been stranded in hotels, unable to act due to FEMA’s delayed response.
