On Oct 9, a team of Chinese and Australian scientists revealed in a study published in Cell that they used a new machine-learning tool to discover 161,979 new species of ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus. Identified using metagenomics, 70,500 viruses previously unknown to science are uncovered, many of them weird and nothing like known species. Nature magazine features the study as the “potential of AI to explore the ‘dark matter’ of the RNA virus universe.”

This project, financed by the Chinese government, is the largest virus species discovery paper ever published. It is an instance of CCP’s unrestricted bioweapon program focusing on RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (the COVID-19 virus).
First, the AI-based model LucaProt tested in this project was developed by Alibaba Cloud. It improves the viral discovery process by analyzing samples for protein sequences and structural features, “helping researchers discover thousands of potential viruses.”
“The success of this model not only paves the way for further applications of artificial intelligence in microbiology but also sets a new standard for data-driven discovery in biological sciences,” said Yong He, algorithm expert at Alibaba Cloud’s Apsara Lab and co-author of the recent research paper.
However, Alibaba Cloud is widely known to provide security and intelligence services to the PRC military. In July 2018, Song Jie, the vice president of Alibaba Cloud Computing, spoke at the inaugural Military Big Data Forum hosted by the People’s Liberation Army’s Academy of Military Sciences (AMS). In this forum, Chinese military, academic, and business leaders deliberated on ways to jointly build “the most powerful brain of the military ” based on big data technology and in-depth military-civil cooperation.
“Alibaba’s data intelligence business infrastructure built using the Internet of all things, and cloud computing has huge advantages over traditional business infrastructure centered on people.” The forum was co-organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, and the Chinese Academy of Command and Control.
