The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in California reported that an armed man carrying fake VIP and press passes for Donald Trump’s rally in Coachella was arrested at a security checkpoint on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The arrest, made around 5 p.m. PDT, took place near the rally site at Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive, and the suspect was later identified as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas.

Miller was found with a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine in his possession, which were discovered during routine security checks. According to the official press release, Miller was taken into custody without incident and later booked at the John J. Benoit Detention Center. He faces charges of possession of a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine, with his court date set for January 2, 2025.

Sheriff Chad Bianco, speaking to the Southern California News Group, suggested that the quick actions of deputies likely prevented a third assassination attempt on former President Trump. Bianco explained that Miller had presented fake credentials that raised alarms among the security personnel. “They were different enough to cause the deputies alarm,” Bianco stated. “We probably stopped another assassination attempt.”

The Press Telegram reported that Bianco believes Miller, who is a member of a right-leaning anti-government group and self-identified sovereign citizen, planned to kill Trump. Sovereign citizens are individuals who claim they are not subject to government laws unless they consent to them. Bianco further disclosed that the FBI is currently questioning another man, who was also barred from entering the rally after bomb-detecting police dogs repeatedly signaled that he might pose a threat.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office urged anyone with additional information about the case to contact Deputy Coronado at the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station at (760) 836–1600. Despite the alarming situation, the Secret Service has confirmed they are aware of the arrest and are continuing to monitor the investigation.

Miller, who holds a master’s degree from UCLA and ran for state assembly in Nevada in 2022, was released on $5,000 bail pending his upcoming court appearance. Authorities have assured the public that this incident did not impact the safety of Donald Trump or those attending the event.
