U.S. Credibility in Tatters: Who Will Tell the American People?

In the midst of a tight presidential election campaign in the United States, events unfolding at the United Nations General Assembly ought to be ringing alarm bells among Americans accustomed to seeing their nation as the “first among equals”, as the “Sole Superpower” able to dictate policy to the rest of the world.  U.S. support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, and for Israel in what has become a barbaric two-front military operation, has been denounced not only by nations of the Global South, but by some among its allies, no longer able to hold back their criticism.  The discontent has been fueled by the escalation of the two crises toward a full-scale World War III and possible nuclear war.

In the words of one European critic of American policy, which reflects a broad sentiment, “We are nearing the end of the Unipolar moment.”   But who will tell the American people?

Condemnation of Israel

Much of the sympathy for Israel following the attack by Hamas on October 7 has been eclipsed by the brutality of its campaign of indiscriminate mass murder of Palestinians by Israel Defense Forces, and its subsequent attack against Hezbollah in Lebanon, with multiple civilian casualties.  A resolution calling for the dismantling of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, and an end to occupation, passed overwhelmingly as the session opened.  One after another, leaders from the Global South expressed anger and frustration at the unwillingness of the Biden administration to use its “leverage” to stop the killing.

Typical of the outrage was the appeal from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who pleaded,  “Stop this crime. Stop it now. Stop killing children and women. Stop the genocide. Stop sending weapons to Israel.”  Much of Gaza has been “destroyed”, he stated, and Israel is engaging in deadly attacks on the West Bank. “This madness cannot continue.  The entire world is responsible for what is happening to our people in Gaza and the West Bank.”

A sign of deepening division among TransAtlantic allies was the appeal from Prime Minister Luis Montenegro of NATO member Portugal, who said,  “It is our common interest and shared responsibility to ensure strict respect for international law and humanitarian law, as well as the proper functioning of the international justice system.”  Despite rulings issued months ago by the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice against Israeli violation of international law, Israel has ignored the motions against them, and the U.S. has defended Israel’s violations.  At the same time, the U.S. has repeatedly vetoed U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding that Israel be held accountable for these violations.

U.S. Hypocrisy Exposed

The hypocritical stance of the U.S. has not escaped notice.  Since October 7, Secretary of State Blinken has made nine “shuttle diplomacy” visits to the region.  After each, he said that the U.S. was “getting closer” to reaching agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage exchange, followed by a hollow call for “humanitarian” treatment of innocent civilians.  For example, on May 1, he said “There is no time for delay,” adding that “Israel has made very important compromises…demonstrating its desire and willingness to get this agreement and getting it done.”  Yet the killing continued, hunger and disease spread, while Blinken shed crocodile tears over the carnage.

Again, following meetings on August 18, Blinken asserted that there is “a real sense of urgency [on] the need to get this over the finish line and do it as soon as possible.”  After this visit, U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris praised Blinken, and said, “We are going to continue to work very hard on this,” even as the confirmed death toll of Palestinians passed 40,000.  The one tool the U.S. held, to withhold further monetary support and flow of lethal weapons to Israel, has not been used to pressure Netanyahu.

Blinken’s Kabuki Theater

Blinken’s credibility, and that of the Biden administration as an “honest broker”, was ripped to shreds in an article by Brett Murphy, published in ProPublica on September 24, thanks to the leaking of two documents produced by agencies in Blinken’s State Department.  One was a 17-page memo sent to Blinken in May 2024 by researchers in the Agency for International Development, which reported instances of Israeli interference with the delivery of aid to Gaza, including the murder of aid workers, bombing ambulances and hospitals and routinely turning back trucks full of food and medicine.  A similar memo was drafted and delivered by the State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.

Yet days later, on May 10, Blinken told a Congressional committee, “We do not currently assess that the Israeli government is prohibiting or otherwise restricting the transport or delivery of U.S. humanitarian assistance.”  This, despite an official announcement by Israel’s Defense Minister Gallant on October 9 that Israel would conduct a “complete siege” on Gaza, withholding food, water, fuel and medicine.  Thus, Blinken has been exposed by leaks from his own department as complicit in Israel’s policy of genocide.

Blinken and Ukraine

Prior to the convening of the U.N. General Assembly, Blinken was engaged in a U.S.-U.K. Strategic Dialogue, in which he conspired with U.K. defense officials and Prime Minister Starmer to pressure President Biden to allow Ukraine to use U.S. and British long-range missiles to target sites within Russia.  After Blinken and Foreign Minister Lammy met with Zelensky in Kyiv, he said that they would brief Biden and Starmer on NATO’s puppet Zelensky’s demand that the U.S. allow such strikes against Russia.

“The bottom line is this,” he said. “We want Ukraine to win and we’re committed to keep marshalling the support it needs.”  Blinken first advocated allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russia after a May 14 meeting in Kyev.  According to a report in the {New York Times}, Blinken then met with Biden and “underscored the need to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S.-made weapons.”

Following warnings from President Putin that giving in to Zelensky’s demand would be seen by him as a declaration of war against Russia by NATO, Biden rejected — at least temporarily — the British-directed policy during a tense meeting with Starmer on September 13, and again, following a meeting with Zelensky on September 26.

Blinken’s lifeless eyes and souless expression visible in his non-stop promotion of war betrays his allegience to British geopolitical doctrine.  He cites war criminal and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as his mentor, thus identifying himself as the latest in a line of Democratic Party neocons, which goes back to the Russophobic architect of “the Islamic card” and the “War on Terror”, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and former Democratic U.S. Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson, who promoted a bipartisan alliance of neocons in the mid-1970s.  This lineage is the late 20th century American version of British imperial geopolitics, with its focus on disrupting any potential alliance between European nations and Eurasian countries.  The targeting of Russia through NATO eastward expansion, and moves to create a Global NATO to counter China, are a product of Brzezinski’s geopolitical calculus, serving as a rationale for defense of the Unipolar Order.  Not surprisingly, given this utopian embrace of the U.S. as the global Hegemon, Blinken appears to be willing to risk nuclear war, believing that either Putin is bluffing, or the U.S. could win such a war!
