Europe must brace for a possible military conflict with Russia within the next six to eight years, according to Andrius Kubilius, the European Union’s first-ever defense commissioner and former Lithuanian prime minister. In a recent interview with Reuters, Kubilius emphasized that the EU needs to rapidly ramp up its military preparedness as tensions with Russia continue to escalate.

“Defense ministers and NATO generals agree that Vladimir Putin could be ready for confrontation with NATO and the EU in 6-8 years,” Kubilius stated. He added, “If we take these assessments seriously, then that is the time for us to properly prepare, and it is a short one. This means we have to take quick decisions, and ambitious decisions.”

Kubilius’ remarks come as NATO’s Baltic states, including Lithuania, maintain a hawkish stance towards Russia. The appointment of Kubilius to this newly created EU defense role is viewed as a signal of the bloc’s commitment to increasing defense spending and enhancing military capabilities. Although the European Union does not have military leadership like NATO, it can leverage its financial instruments to support military readiness across member states. Kubilius has called for an investment of 500 billion euros in the coming years to strengthen European defenses.

However, Kubilius’ call for preparation has sparked concerns about the potential for nuclear confrontation, as Russia has repeatedly warned that it would resort to nuclear weapons if its territory or population faced an existential threat. The head of Russia’s State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, warned that Europe’s militarization and calls for offensive actions, such as the European Parliament’s recent symbolic resolution supporting Ukrainian strikes inside Russia, could lead to a world war involving nuclear weapons.
