A Department of Justice inspector general report released on Thursday said that the FBI is failing to properly investigate sex offenses against children, noting that individual agents are juggling dozens of cases at one time. Additionally, of 300 child sex cases filed from 2021 to 2023, the FBI did not follow up on 42 of them.
The report by the IG also noted that 50% of all child sex cases during that time were never referred to local law enforcement and of the other 50%, only 43% were referred within 24 hours, which is required by FBI regulations.

Former FBI special agent Jane Turner, who worked for the Bureau for 25 years and led the FBI’s programs combating crimes against women and child sex victims said that the FBI doesn’t focus on child sex crimes because agents feel it is beneath them and that they prefer to focus on headline-grabbing cases like terrorism or January 6.
