As aspiring assassin Thomas Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service snipers at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, a remote detonator was discovered on his body next to his cell phone.
The detonator, a grey rectangular device with a keypad like a television remote control, was seen next to the gunman’s cellphone in a photo initially released by Pittsburgh’s WPXI reports Dailymail.
It was previously reported that inside the troubled 20-year-old’s automobile, investigating FBI officials found bomb ingredients, ammunition, and a bulletproof vest. According to CNN, the detonator was linked to the bombs.
When Crooks arrived in the area at about 3:00 p.m., he caught the attention of security at the event, which was held in the town of Butler, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.
At least an hour before the attempted murder, the gunman was acting abnormally near the metal detectors and was later observed using a rangefinder.
At 6:11 p.m., there was a shooting at the demonstration. An hour later than scheduled, at 6:03 p.m., Trump took the stage.
Law enforcement has not made any comments on what they think Crooks may have planned to do following the shooting four days later, despite growing criticism of the Secret Service for their failure to safeguard the event.
