Iconic actor and traditionalist Catholic Mel Gibson wrote a letter to Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò following his excommunication by Pope Francis.

The Vatican claimed Viganò was guilty of schism for his “refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff” and doubting the “legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council.” As a result of his excommunication, Viganò will be denied the Eucharist and made into a pariah within his own church until he falls in line. Viganò has made it clear that will never be happening.

“I regard the accusations against me as an honor,” Viganò said defiantly.

Viganò’s bravery has earned the respect of Gibson, who is scheduled to release a much-anticipated sequel to “Passion of the Christ” in the near future.

“I hope you will continue to say Mass and receive the sacraments yourself — it really is a badge of honor to be shunned by the false, post conciliar church,” Gibson wrote in his letter. “You have my sympathies that you suffer publicly this grave injustice. To me and many others you are a most courageous hero.”

“You are a modern day Athanasius!” Gibson wrote, comparing Viganò to a 4th Century orthodox leader who was repeatedly exiled for standing strong in the faith. “I have all respect for the way you defend Christ and His Church.”

Big League Politics has reported on Viganò’s crusade against corruption within the Catholic Church as Pope Francis perverts the doctrine and promotes globalism from the pulpit:

A Catholic Archbishop who formerly served as the Vatican’s ambassador to the United States is accusing elements of the Catholic hierarchy of operating as a “deep church,” working in conjunction with the so-called American deep state.

Archbishop Viganò is known as something of a conservative “dissident” within the Catholic episcopate, most notably publicly accusing Pope Francis and other senior Vatican officials of failing to act after being made aware of credible accusations of sexual abuse against now-disgraced American ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

The missive can be read in full at LifeSiteNews. In the letter, Viganò speaks critically of Pope Francis, a practice that is exceptionally rare within the college of Catholic bishops, let alone on the part of an Archbishop who recently served as a prominent member of the Church’s diplomatic hierarchy. Archbishop Viganò speaks of the traditional Jesuit(a religious order in which the Pope began his clerical career) practice of declining positions of authority in the Catholic hierarchy.
