from Great Game India:

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), responsible for aiding Palestinian refugees, could soon be declared a terrorist organization by Israel, stripping its staff of immunity and banning its operations within the country. This dramatic move, supported by the Knesset, stems from accusations that UNRWA has been aiding Hamas, although a UN review found no evidence for these claims. The proposal has significant implications for the millions dependent on UNRWA’s services, stirring international controversy and raising questions about the agency’s future.

Under several proposals that have been submitted in the Knesset, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) may be labeled a terrorist organization, its employees may lose their immunity, and its operations within Israel may be prohibited reports RT.

To assist Palestinian refugees, the UNRWA was founded in 1949 and is authorized to conduct operations in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. It has been charged by Israel with supporting Hamas and other terrorist Palestinian organizations.

“We are on the UN’s blacklist in any case. “All the excessive morality ended on October 7,” MK Yulia Malinovsky of Yisrael Beitenu, who advocated designating the UNRWA as a terrorist organization, stated on Monday. In Israel, she referred to the agency as “a fifth column.”

In the first reading of her bill, the Knesset voted 50 to 10. The legislation that would prohibit UNRWA from operating on Israeli soil and deprive its employees of the rights and advantages accorded to UN employees was also advanced by Israeli parliamentarians.

The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee was tasked with reviewing the three proposals in more detail. For them to take effect, two more votes must be passed.

More than 30,000 individuals work for UNRWA, which has helped Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank as well as those requesting asylum in nearby nations by providing food assistance, medical care, education, and social services. More than two million people, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, rely on it to survive.

Twelve UNRWA personnel allegedly participated in the October 7 Hamas attacks, which resulted in over 1,100 Israeli deaths and about 250 Israelis being taken hostage in Gaza, according to claims made by the Israeli government in January. West Jerusalem further asserted that 190 UNRWA employees permitted the assailants to utilize the organization’s buildings as safe havens in exchange for intelligence and logistical support to Hamas.

The US, UK, Germany, and other 18 donor countries stopped providing financing to UNRWA as a result of the allegations. But in April, a UN-commissioned independent inquiry declared that Israel had not produced any proof to back up its allegations.
