The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story is a best-selling 1994 nonfiction thriller by Richard Preston about the origins and incidents involving viral hemorrhagic fevers, particularly ebolaviruses and Marburg viruses. Preston’s 1992 New Yorker article “Crisis in the Hot Zone” was the basis of the book.
Filoviruses — including the Ebola virus, Sudan virus, Marburg virus, and Ravn virus — are Biosafety Level 4 agents. They are extremely dangerous to humans because they are very infectious, have a high fatality rate, and most have no known prophylactic measures, treatments, or cures. Along with describing the history of the devastation caused by two of these Central African diseases, Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease, Preston described a 1989 incident in which a relative of the Ebola virus, Reston virus, was discovered at a primate quarantine facility in Reston, Virginia, less than 15 miles (24 km) away from Washington, D.C.

Preston could not have imagined that a real hot zone would be Wuhan, China, in 2019 with a coronavirus that was poised to get the entire world sick. In this issue of the McCullough Report, we cover more testimony on Capitol Hill from Dr. Peter Daszak, PhD, on his role in the creation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China. John Leake goes in-depth on reporting that Daszak had prized research grants from the National Institutes of Health that essentially shuttled the design plans and laboratory procedures in writing from Dr. Ralph Baric at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to Dr. Wuhan-based virologist Shi Zhengli who had identified dozens of deadly SARS-like viruses in bat caves.
This team of conspirators created the first prototypical chimeric virus and published their findings in two prestigious medical journals in 2015 and 2016. Previously, Dr. Anthony Fauci was not asked a single important question from the House Select Coronavirus Subcommittee on his role with Drs. Ralph Baric, Peter Daszak, and Shi Zhengli on the creation, through gain-of-function research, of the SARS-like Wuhan Institute of Virology-1-CoV virus published in 2015-2016.
He was not asked why the genetic code from Baric’s virus was not released to the public per usual procedures with government-sponsored research. A tip-off to the choreography in Washington is that Baric and these publications have never been brought forward for questions from the House or the Senate.
Why has Baric not released the genetic code for these creations? Does it match the “wild-type” original Wuhan strain of SARS-CoV-2? Why was Daszak chosen by the WHO to inspect the Wuhan site in January 2020 and tell us the virus came from nature when he knew all along it was the product of his coordinated work with Baric and Zhengli?
