Facebook-billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is constructing a sprawling 1,400-acre compound on the Hawaiian island of Kauai – with some estimates placing the final cost around $270 million. Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have been purchasing swathes of land on the Hawaiian island for nearly a decade – ostensibly to build what they say is a family compound and get-a-way vacation home. Reports from local residents, however, indicate there may be more to the picture than a simple family compound.
The property will feature two mansions, their combined size being roughly 57,000 square feet. At least one of the structures contains numerous conference rooms and an industrial kitchen – suggesting the property will be used for more than just the rest and relaxation of the Zuckerberg family. Indeed, some reports indicate the Hawaiian property has already been used by Zuckerberg to host corporate retreats.

Taking a page from the Ian Fleming “James Bond” spy-thrillers, the two mansions are connected by an underground structure some have dubbed a ‘lair’. The subterranean facility will serve as a mixture of storage and residential space, including a panic room, an escape route, and even a bomb shelter with large, military-style steel and concrete doors.
Shifting from Bond to Star Wars, the property will also feature “a web of 11 disk-shaped treehouses… which will be connected by intricate rope bridges, allowing visitors to cross from one building to the next while staying among the treetops.” The disruption of natural features and prospect of additional large-corporate events at Zuckerberg’s compound have local residents concerned. A Change.org petition has been signed by over a million people in opposition to the billionaire’s Hawaiian land-grab and the impacts it is having on the native population and environment.
