On December 4, 2023, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin declared that he believes illegal aliens should be offered a path to United States citizenship if they join the military.
Durbin is the Senate Majority Whip and he is also chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He put the idea forward on the floor of the US Senate after making comments about several Republicans’ opposition to approving additional aid to Ukraine without making wide-ranging border security reforms.

“What troubles me about the debate now about the southern border is that it is one-half of the immigration equation,” Durbin stated. “Yes, we need order at the border. Yes, we need to have changes in the laws that reflect the reality of the overwhelming numbers from all over the world who are coming to our shores and our border.”
“But there’s also an incredible demand for legal immigration into this country, even now,” Durbin added. He subsequently alluded to legislation put forward by fellow Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth to guarantee immigrant service members receive aid to acquire US citizenship and veterans’ benefits.
“Her bill — and I hope I describe it accurately — says that if you are an undocumented person in this country and you can pass the physical and the required test, background test, the like, that you can serve in our military, and if you do it honorably, we will make you citizens of the United States,” Durbin stated.
“Do we need that? Do you know what the recruiting numbers are at the Army and the Navy and the Air Force? They can’t reach their quotas each month. They can’t find enough people to join our military forces. And there are those who are undocumented who want the chance to serve and risk their lives for that country. Should we give them a chance? I think we should,” Durbin continued.
Republicans criticized Durbin’s plan to have illegal aliens enlist in the US military in an attempt to receive citizenship.
“So, the Democrats want to flood the country with illegal aliens, enlist them in the military, and make them citizens. They broke the laws invading this country, and they expect them to take an oath to support and defend our nation? Are they out of their minds?” stated Texas Congressman Randy Weber.
“Manning our military with people whose first act in our nation was to violate its sovereignty can never be trusted with our defense,” declared Joe Kent, a former Green Beret running as a Republican Washington state’s third congressional district
“Secure our borders, deport the illegals, restore pride in our military by restoring the meritocracy & ending foolish interventions,” Kent continued. “I served w/ many great Americans who earned their citizenship by serving in our military, all of them legally entered our nation. We cannot tolerate or normalize the use of illegals in any workforce, especially our military.”
The US has a massive military recruitment largely owing to an increasingly obese/out of shape population, a woke military that no longer appeals to Core Americans, and a military that seems more like a blunt instrument for detached elites as opposed to an entity that defends the Historic America Nation from real threats. As a result, several elected officials such as Durbin want to accelerate the Great Replacement by importing foreigners in order to fill out the military’s playbook.
This is straight out of the Roman empire’s playbook when the Romans brought barbarians and other Germanic tribes into their ranks. Eventually, these foreigners turned on the Romans and started carving out their own power bases as Rome gradually collapsed.
A similar dynamic could occur in the US if the ruling class does not get its act together and restrict immigration as much as possible.
