A recent Washington Post – Schar School poll has made some revelatory discoveries about the state of education in America, and it bodes well for our future. It is simply this: homeschooling is on the rise.

According to the poll, the fastest-growing method of education in America is homeschooling. After the school closures brought on by COVID-19, many pundits believed the rise in homeschool numbers would revert back to pre-covid levels. However, the pundits are usually wrong, and this case is no different.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, prior to the pandemic, there were 1.5 million homeschool families in the US. Currently, the Post estimates there are between 1.9 million and 2.7 million families who have chosen to homeschool.

According to the Post’s analysis: “Home Schooling’s surging popularity crosses every measurable line of politics, geography, and demographics.”

Politics

The federal government last performed a survey of homeschool parents in 2019. That survey found Republican homeschooling families outnumbered Democrat homeschooling families 3 to 1.

The recent Washington Post – Schar poll found the politics among homeschool families has now shifted, and the news is not good for the Democrat party. The Post poll shows an even 50/50 split between Republicans and Democrats.

Geography

The Washington Post – Schar School poll looked at 7000 school districts across the country from 32 states and the District of Columbia. While eleven states do not require families to report to the state government when they choose to homeschool, the data from the poll represents more than 60% of school-age children.

One of the most surprising statistics to come from the poll is that homeschooling is growing the fastest in the blue state of New York, where the homeschool population has more than doubled since 2017. Moreover, the growth is not occurring in the red upstate areas but rather in deep blue New York City.

“In 24 of New York City’s 33 school districts, the number of homeschooled children rose by at least 200%. Brooklyn and the Bronx saw the highest growth rate – some of these boroughs’ districts saw more than 300% growth.”

Demographics

Prior to 2020, 75% of homeschool families were white. This recent poll shows just under half of the homeschooled families are white.

The shocking numbers from the Washington Post – Schar poll does not bode well for the Democrats. The increase in homeschooled students is happening in non-white, democrat families who reside in Democrat-blue states and cities. One would expect to know why Republicans would be leaving the public schools in droves, but why would democrat families leave?

Reasons Why

The pundits and talking heads have been speculating for years as to why families have been leaving the public schools. This survey finally gives us some concrete reasons as to why the increase has exploded since 2020, and again, it does not bode well for the Democrats.

Forty-six percent (46%) of parents say they have left the public schools because of increased liberal influence. Seventy percent (70%) say they have left the public schools because they desire to provide moral instruction to their children.

The takeaway from this poll is twofold: 1) according to the analysis from the survey, “Homeschooling has become a mainstay of the American educational system” as the number of homeschooled families continues to increase. 2) the progressive takeover of public schools drives mainstream Democrat families away.
